meu meu

what's the remedy to an exhausting shift of trying to get folks to exit your tent at the reggae fest that they have taken over to get their smoke on?

ginger-pineapple gelati (seriously though, sweet spicy...heaven)

from meu meu, my new favorite spot for gelati on st. denis

*on the environmental tip, i have to report the following car, licence plate 868 NWM as a drive-by litterer. SHAME.

and i don't think i shouted out Naantha yet at the Cash and Curry on Duluth, but i need to go back for some shark, the phad thai was killer, check Lateef's review in the latest Nightlife (it's a two-monther issue, so you gots the whole summer to read it, don't be lazy). Peer Pressure's got their eye candy all over the cover too, so what?

p.74 for homeless sex, the article that had actually quite a short turnover time from being envisioned to written.

segafredo

once again...it seems that everyone is taking a little self-imposed hiatus, and there's nothing wrong with that, but last friday night at sega, i was really thinking that the spot is like for me what Natalie's was to Williams and Torres, and it was fantastic.

the back booth is pretty sweet, the shirley temples are done to my liking (with OJ 'cuz i'm west coast and two cherries).

james was in the lineup, and did a great job turning down (and up) his bass, malika was her usual effervescent self, singing my jam, "If you love me" by Brownstone, andy was playing like a maniac, though i kept hoping that his hair would magically grow back.

seriously, make yourselves available friday nights from 5-12 (come on, man, that is more than flexible), you won't regret it.

lost-season deux

"sometimes we gravitate towards things that are pertinent"

"i think they're all dead and the island is some kind of purgatory because they all have issues to work out"

some of the recent comments that i've heard as i've flown through the second season of this show, pretty much all in one shot. it is very well written, and i am certain that all this mess that folks are talking about about how they don't know how to end it is bullshit, because it's clear that they must have had this thing all worked out and did a fantastic job with backwards editing.

it does work on a paradigm shift of being lost and found and somewhere in the middle (and being ok with that), action and reaction, loss and loving to your fullest....and i think that's why it works so well because it is essentially what we are about.

but it's still like crack, man. i'ma need to set some time aside specifically for season three..it was broken up into parts, right?

asian invasion

what a funny name for a comedy show.

but for the second year in a row, the lineup has been amazing....very nice.

Sugar Sammy was just lurking around, and i saw him the next nite at the showcase, he's still funny, but i wish he would do some new jokes already. oh well, maybe he's taking the merchandising scheme of the GAP and saving up to do a complete flip, rather than a gradual turnover. i mean, he also opened for Dave Chappelle, so it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing or anything.

Bigup to that DJ, i think it was the same dood as last year, and as soon as i find out his name, i'ma big him up...

And to the very, very funny lineup: KT Tatara, Jo Koy, Jazz Mann, Jeffrey Yu, and host Mark Saldana.

Special shoutout to all the guys for performing again the next nite at the showcase featuring four other comics...their names escape me, but they were funny. :)

i heart noodles

there's nothing better than a steaming bowl for some clarity and focus, because if you don't focus, you'll burn your face and tongue.

"in Asia, people are always together, but they never talk about themselves"

"here, people are always alone and can't shut up about themselves"

cold korean noodles, hot bun rieu, it's been a weekend of noodles, and i know what i'm going to write my book about.

how's that for a september plan?

 :)

menace to society

this is a blog honoring one of my favorite bloggers, VIBE and Myspace famed Humanity Critic (http://www.myspace.com/humanitycritic) who has been making me giggle for a hot minute, mostly last week with his on-point christening of Rohan Marley as "the millenium Yoko Ono" for breaking up the Fugees and making Lauryn Hill all crazy, and with his uncanny knack of finding the shiniest gems on Youtube, like this priceless one:

Hillary vs. Obama

he never did come through on that throatchop that i ordered though..hmmm....

your mama

's favorite DJ, that is. yep! Kid Koala played the jazzfest, and i had the privilege of being the "plus one" of local animator Jonathan Ng, whose collaborations with the niceguy DJ are of a cartoon b-boy nature:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GJ1sZBTnbuE

check out the subsequent parts too, they are well worth it.

the Kid was "feeling silly" as evidenced by the papers he was turning on his board, the fact that his merch table included oven mitts and aprons, and that he brought up a lady helper from the audience to challenge him in the first ever jazz festival thumb wrestling championship (complete with the "official" ring that he just bought overseas in Asia).

the crowd was ecclectic, as Mister Koala always brings in a mixed crowd, his energy was sustained and infectuous (there's nothing like seeing a DJ really love what he does, and what's not to love about the profession of cold rocking the party?!), and this girl almost died when he played Outkast's "The Whole World", cut up Moon River, and unveiled his new funky homosapien related work.

Kid Koala may be your mom's favorite DJ, but something tells me that he's got your sister and your cousin on lock too.

i want you, ooh you turn me on, stay.

so i've only been waiting 15 years to see one Me'shell N'degeocello live and two feet away from me in concert, so as soon as i found out that shift was cancelled, i hustled my bustle down to the Spectrum to get my ticket (bigup to the visitors who just "dropped in" from Afghanistan).

that being said, i wish i could've seen her when she was less in her rocky stage, though it was all beauty-full and all her musicians played like they had the devil in them. her tribute to James was not just some cheesy cover, but seriously something that chanelled his spirit that was not devoid of effort.

i pounded the stage very hard when she sang "Free My Heart", the only from a repetoire of so many.

woulda liked to hear: "outside your door", "stay", "soul searching" (yeah, you know i have the Higher Learning soundtrack), "if that's your.." (talk about tribute to James), "soul record", basically any damn thing from the first two albums, which were easily my favorite-ists.

but, wow. the woman is magic. let's work on wishing and willing Erykah Badu into town next, ok?
