mis-fortune cookie

i find it interesting that this lil’ one is making quite the comeback as a marketing vessel, i forgot to blog about it when i saw the white girls in cheong sam handing them out in vancouver in hopes of promoting Survivor China or some other nonsense, but this past weekend, when Motorola Razr had people out in yellowface (thanks Alaska for the term) handing them out on st.cat’s, i had to say something here. the cookies, which were chocolate dipped, were served in a tiny takeout box (which i collected to make a mobile after i covered them in images from old prison calendars) and the “fortune” inside read: “confucious says…buy a razr phone” or some other nonsense. the cookies themselves are a cultural d/evolutionary measure, as north american chinese restaurants had to adapt their cuisine to cater to more cock-asian tastes, and that included a “dessert” and thus, the cookie. but i’m pretty sure confucious never called for this. it’s like the people who sit and beg on the street with signs that read: “karma, fifty cents”. it just don’t work like that, man. see? this is why reverse-racism doesn’t exist, because racist is as racist does, in any direction. one day before i abdicate to toronto, i will have to get together with the hipless boy and make the mis-fortune cookies that we wanted to do (and/or do the miss fortune cookie pageant that we wanted to do) which include smashing the cookies in their individually wrapped wrongness and write our own fortunes to stick on the front of the package.

adriel luis

has me contemplating “ethnic makeups”. check the video “slip of the tongue” done with karen lum here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IQZwZVBDAHI. also, his own website (from where i jacked the shoe picture above): http://www.adrielluis.com/. i am in the process of stalking him on myspace, but haven’t logged in to check that account yet. “i wear foundation, but not that powdery stuff.” bigup. lookatyou, inspiring me to get back on stage and shit.

asian invasion

what a funny name for a comedy show.

but for the second year in a row, the lineup has been amazing….very nice.

Sugar Sammy was just lurking around, and i saw him the next nite at the showcase, he’s still funny, but i wish he would do some new jokes already. oh well, maybe he’s taking the merchandising scheme of the GAP and saving up to do a complete flip, rather than a gradual turnover. i mean, he also opened for Dave Chappelle, so it’s not like he doesn’t know what he’s doing or anything.

Bigup to that DJ, i think it was the same dood as last year, and as soon as i find out his name, i’ma big him up…

And to the very, very funny lineup: KT Tatara, Jo Koy, Jazz Mann, Jeffrey Yu, and host Mark Saldana.

Special shoutout to all the guys for performing again the next nite at the showcase featuring four other comics…their names escape me, but they were funny. :)

i heart noodles

there’s nothing better than a steaming bowl for some clarity and focus, because if you don’t focus, you’ll burn your face and tongue.

“in Asia, people are always together, but they never talk about themselves”

“here, people are always alone and can’t shut up about themselves”

cold korean noodles, hot bun rieu, it’s been a weekend of noodles, and i know what i’m going to write my book about.

how’s that for a september plan?

 :)

don’t call it a comeback

the ricepaper site has a new address and a facelift:

your mama

’s favorite DJ, that is. yep! Kid Koala played the jazzfest, and i had the privilege of being the “plus one” of local animator Jonathan Ng, whose collaborations with the niceguy DJ are of a cartoon b-boy nature:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GJ1sZBTnbuE

check out the subsequent parts too, they are well worth it.

the Kid was “feeling silly” as evidenced by the papers he was turning on his board, the fact that his merch table included oven mitts and aprons, and that he brought up a lady helper from the audience to challenge him in the first ever jazz festival thumb wrestling championship (complete with the “official” ring that he just bought overseas in Asia).

the crowd was ecclectic, as Mister Koala always brings in a mixed crowd, his energy was sustained and infectuous (there’s nothing like seeing a DJ really love what he does, and what’s not to love about the profession of cold rocking the party?!), and this girl almost died when he played Outkast’s “The Whole World”, cut up Moon River, and unveiled his new funky homosapien related work.

Kid Koala may be your mom’s favorite DJ, but something tells me that he’s got your sister and your cousin on lock too.
